Why most websites underperform

A beautiful website nobody finds is a billboard in a basement.

Customers don’t start with your website. They start with a question. To win the job, your site has to do three things in order, and most only manage one.

  1. 01

    Get found

Show up when someone searches, asks an AI assistant or checks the map. That takes clear pages for each service, place and question that matters.

    Usually missing
  2. 02

    Be understood

In seconds, a visitor should know what you do, where you work, why you’re the right choice and what it takes to get started.

    Often buried
  3. 03

    Get chosen

Make the next step effortless: one tap to call, a short form, a clear offer. Every bit of friction sends people back to the search results.

    Where leads leak

How customers find businesses now

Your next customer is asking a question. Who gets named in the answer?

People still search Google, but they also read AI summaries, ask ChatGPT or Copilot, and check the map. Underneath, every one of these works the same way. It pulls from information it can find, read and trust. If your website never clearly says what you do, where you do it and why you’re a good choice, there’s nothing for any of them to repeat.

What the platforms actually say

  • Google says there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet.

    Google Search Central ↗
  • ChatGPT search finds sites through OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot crawler, which is controlled separately from model training.

    OpenAI ↗
  • Bing Webmaster Tools now reports how often a site is cited in Copilot and Bing AI answers (public preview).

    Bing Webmaster Blog ↗
  • Google treats mass-produced, low-value pages as spam, whether or not AI wrote them. Useful beats plentiful.

    Google Search Central ↗

The takeaway: there’s no secret AI trick. The businesses that get found are the ones whose websites clearly answer the questions their customers ask, on pages search engines can crawl. That part is something you control.

What I do

Two ways to grow. Clear prices to start.

Build a website that converts, expand how often you’re found, or both. Starting prices are published so you know where you stand before we talk.

Custom websites

from $5,000

Designed around your customers, built fast and accessible, with the technical SEO foundation already in place.

  • Custom design — no templates — for up to 8 core pages
  • Mobile-first, accessible, fast build
  • Technical SEO foundation: titles, structured data, sitemap, indexing
  • Copy shaped around what your customers actually ask
  • A simple inquiry flow that lands in your inbox

Search expansion

Every useful page is another way in.

A five-page website can only answer so many questions. Each well-researched page you add, about a service, a problem or a place you work, gives search engines and AI assistants one more clear reason to show you to someone who needs you.

Illustrative example for a Southwest Florida HVAC company. More pages only help when each one is genuinely useful and distinct. Page counts don’t guarantee rankings or traffic.

Real businesses. Real customers.

Fictional concepts

What I’d build for you.

Three working, interactive concept sites for imaginary businesses: a tea bar, a bakery and a fishing charter. They aren’t clients. They show what’s possible when a site is designed around how customers actually decide.

Why Raybird

A designer’s eye. An operator’s judgment.

I’m Scotty Gilkey. Before I build a website, I think about it the way a business owner does, because I’ve been on that side of it.

I’ve worked inside real businesses: automotive e-commerce, premium local services and home services. That meant reading ad performance, studying how customers actually buy, and fixing the places where they drop off. Pretty isn’t the goal. Customers are.

So every Raybird site is built around three questions:

  • Does this page answer what a customer is actually asking?
  • Is the next step obvious, especially on a phone?
  • Can we measure whether it’s working, and improve it?

Straight answers

Questions owners actually ask.

How much does a website cost?

Custom websites start at $5,000. Every project gets a fixed quote after a short conversation, because the price depends on the number of pages, the features you need and how much content needs writing. Redesigns of an existing site usually sit closest to the starting price. Brand-new builds, e-commerce and custom tools land higher. You’ll know the full number before any work begins. See what’s included.

Can you guarantee rankings, traffic or AI recommendations?

No, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Google, ChatGPT, Copilot and the rest decide what to show. What I can do is make sure your site is technically sound, easy to crawl, and full of clear, genuinely useful answers to what your customers are asking. That’s the foundation every one of those systems relies on.

How long does a project take?

Most custom websites take roughly four to eight weeks from kickoff to launch. Search packages typically take two to six weeks depending on size. The biggest variable is usually how quickly content and feedback come together, and I’ll give you a realistic schedule up front.

Do you only work with Southwest Florida businesses?

No. I’m based in Southwest Florida and happy to meet local clients in person, but most of the work happens remotely and works just as well for businesses anywhere in the U.S.

Who owns the website?

You do. Your domain, your content and your platform accounts are set up in your name, and you can take them anywhere. No hostage situations, no surprise transfer fees.

Do you use AI to build websites?

Yes, as a tool, the same way I use design software and analytics. It speeds up research and development. Every strategy, page and line of copy is planned, reviewed and edited by me, and nothing is published unless it’s accurate and genuinely useful.
